The Agony and the EcstasyIt was always an exhilarating thrill; racing down the steep slope on your American Flyer sled, cold wind beating against your rose-colored face, the flexible steering enabling you to dodge other sleds and those walking back up the hillside, anticipating the large bump at the base of the hill that would hurl you into space to land with a delightful “thump” onto the hard-packed snow. Then, suddenly, it was over. You and your sled cruise to an anti-climatic stop. Behind you looms that steep slope that just seconds before had given you so much joy. Now, it has become a barrier to that joy. You have but few options. You look back toward your home and then glance again at the hill. Your decision is made. Taking hold of the rope you begin the ascent. Within a short time, you notice how cold your hands are, the wet gloves offering little protection from the chilling winds. You precariously dodge sleds speeding down the hill, the joy on the faces of those riders almost a mockery of your struggle to the top. Your legs begin to ache. You question the worth of your climb. When you reach the point when you don’t believe you can take another step you realize you stand upon the summit. You made it! You quickly catch your breath and your legs cease to ache. Your hands no longer sting from the cold. You have already forgotten the agony of your recent climb. You are again ready to experience the ecstasy of flying down the marvelous hill. At this point in your
life you may find yourself racing down the hillside, enjoying life in
a way you hope will never end. Or, you may be climbing what appears to
be an insurmountable mountain, struggling to take another step. If, in
your journey, you are struggling up the hill, remember that our Creator
can help you take that next step. He will help you to the summit. If you
are enjoying the glorious thrill of the ride, thank Him, knowing that
it is He who has given you this joy. And, perhaps, most of all, we should
remember that all of us experience difficulties and joys in our sojourn
on this earth. If we remain faithful to Him, He will give us the ultimate
victory and the eternal exhilarating thrill. |
