Taking the Back Seat

Our Black Lab, Alex, is now famous. His fame can be attributed to his picture appearing on the book jacket of A Yellow Raincoat & Other Memories. We have tried to keep this from going to his head.

Unfortunately, this picture has created a bit of a family dilemma as pointed out by our three year old grandson, Andrew, when he first saw the photo. “Where’s Tooty?” Sooty is our quite spoiled cat who thinks he owns our house and tries to run the place. If you have a cat, you probably know what I am referring to. We had to explain to Andrew that Sooty could not be in the photo because he could not go outside and he would not sit for a picture anyway. Sooty would just have to take a back seat to Alex for a change.

It is not always easy taking the back seat. The Apostle Andrew brought his brother Peter to the Lord. From that time forward, Andrew had to take a back seat to Peter. On the Mount of Transfiguration, it was Peter, James, and John with Jesus. In the Garden of Gethsemane on the night before our Lord’s death, Peter, James, and John were placed closer to Jesus. I wonder if Andrew ever thought, “What about me, Lord? I’m somebody. Can’t you see I’m doing things for the Kingdom too?”

We must never forget that the Lord does see what we do for Him. Whether we are a Peter or an Andrew the good we do will be rewarded by Him. “Let us not be weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”
(Galatians 6:9).
