Don't Forget the Happy Ending!

Andrew, our five year old grandson, travels with his mother past a depiction of the Stations of the Cross everyday after preschool. His curiosity got the best of him and he asked his mother what all the statues and markers were. As she always tries to both stimulate this curiosity and to satiate it, she stopped to give him a better look.

As mother and son progressed past each of the stations, she tried to explain the significance of them in a manner in which a five-year old might understand. He gave seemingly limited attention to the discussion, due to the number of insects, rocks, and sticks that were prominent in the area. Anyone who knows Andrew, though, knows that he is more aware of what is being said and done than most would first realize.

Andrew and Mom reached what was the fourteenth and final station of this particular memorial. It portrayed individuals removing the body of Jesus from the cross. Andrew looked at the presentation and then his mother. In a perception born of innocence he remarked, “They forgot the happy ending!”

Don’t forget the happy ending. He is risen!
