It Is What It IsMost of us have heard the expression, “It is what it is.” We use it when confronted with something we don’t especially like and we don’t believe we can do anything about it. For example, we are talking to a friend and comment that fuel prices have gone up again. He slowly shakes his head and responds, “Saw that. But, it is what it is.” He doesn’t like what he knows but has resolved that he can’t do anything about it. Our employer comes to us and tells us new regulations from the state will require us to change several things on the job site. We object, “Those bureaucrats from the capital don’t have a clue as to how to operate a business. They never leave their fancy offices to know what goes on in the real world.” Our employer slowly shakes his head and says, “I hear ya, but it is what it is.” I have to agree that many times it is what it is and we can’t do anything to change it. However, when this is the attitude we have about the direction our society is taking, I want to say, “It is what it is but it doesn’t have to be.” We need to realize that what is happening in our country that is very wrong doesn’t have to be. We can do something about it. None of us can do it all but each of us can be those drops of rain that slowly, steadily, and surely cut the mighty stone in two. Each of us must do his or her part knowing that “greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world.” We are already winners through Him. Let’s us walk like winners as we do His will.
