It's the Real
Thing

Many of you may remember the Diet Pepsi commercials in which the late
Ray Charles was featured. Late in the fall of 1978, my three-year-old
daughter and I were watching television when one of these commercials
appeared. “Daddy,” she said, “that man is blind.”
“That’s right,” I replied. Immediately I asked her,
“Do you know what blind is?” With out hesitation, she answered,
“I think it gives you heart attacks.” I managed to keep my
laughter inside of me and marveled at the innocent reasoning of a small
child. I suppose her answer would be possible if one were to go blind
without any warning.
My daughter, now 32 years old, no longer believes that blindness causes
heart attacks. She now has a mature mind of reason and therefore can comprehend
and differentiate between fact and fiction. What about you?
Many of us were not taught the truth of God’s Word. We were given
some Biblical facts. Many of these were out of context. Many were only
partially true. At the time, our immature minds could not process these
errors. But now, when we read the Scriptures and find inconsistencies
with what we were taught and what we understand, what changed, our comprehension
or the Scriptures? The honest answer goes without saying. “Be diligent
to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to
be ashamed, handling accurately the word of truth” (II Timothy 2:15
NASB).
