It's Time to Walk the Walk - Part I
In the last Studies I addressed some of my concerns about our society and my fear that many Christians have become Accustomed to the Darkness (See Archives) that is engulfing us. Apparently I am not alone. Many readers wrote to me to share their concerns and asked, “What can we do?” Some offered valuable suggestions as to what we could be doing to help stem the tide. What follows is a list of ideas for you to consider. I doubt that any of us can do all of these things. I know that all of us can do something. Warning! All of these suggestions, including the reading of this article, require an effort on your part. It may not be easy to walk the walk but it is worthwhile. We are on the winning side if we are on His side. In discussing these issues with Dee, I wondered what my explanation to God would be on Judgment Day if I sat back, perhaps complained, and did nothing. Would I tell the Creator, “Well, you know, I was a good watcher. I watched while the battle was being fought. I watched while others gave their all for the One who gave His all. And You know, I didn’t really do anything wrong because I didn’t do anything.” To know the good that we ought to do and to fail to do it is sin in the eyes of God. (See James 4:17) 1. Be knowledgeable. We must know what we are talking about so those who disagree with us cannot dismiss us for being ignorant. We must be able to give answer for the hope that we have. (See I Peter 3:15-16, Colossians 4:6) To be an informed advocate for the truth, we must know the truth. Jesus said, “The truth will set you free.” (John 8:32) The source of your information needs to be broad but selective. Network news services cannot serve as your window to the world. Watch them, but watch them with a discerning eye. I would say the same about radio programs, magazines, newspapers, and information found online. Listen, watch, and read with the foundation of your knowledge built upon the truth of His Word. Your knowledge should be broad as you discuss matters such as history and science. I have heard the statement that we should not discuss politics or religion. If I were to ask what two things most affect your lives, what would they be? It is very difficult to separate politics and religion from any part of your life. Woeful and/or willful ignorance of these subjects or the unwillingness to discuss them does not serve a person or the cause well. Again, please be discerning. Measure leaders, religious and political, against the standard of truth. Don’t be afraid to be the little boy who stood up and said, “I don’t care what all the pundits are saying, the emperor has no clothes.”
