What Are You Doing Here?
Part Six

I Kings 19:13
(I Kings 17-19)

In out last Studies (See Archives) we learned how Elijah, standing on Mt. Horeb, was commanded to stand in the presence of the Lord. We will now hear the message that God gave to Elijah.

Listen…

There was a great and powerful wind that tore the mountains apart and shattered the rock. But the Lord was not in the wind.

Listen…

There was an earthquake. But the Lord was not in the earthquake.

Listen…

There was a fire. But the Lord was not in the fire.

Listen…

There was a quiet whisper. It was the voice of God, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (I Kings 19:13).

Elijah again rehearsed his work and his plight to the Lord, but this time, the Lord had a reply for him. You do not stand alone. We must all be reminded when we feel isolated, we are not alone. There are those who have not bowed down to Baal. There are those who remain faithful to our God. Not only do others stand with us, the victorious saints of the past shout words of encouragement from the stands. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses (See Hebrews11), let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1).

And most of all, our God stands with us when we stand for Him for “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37).

Not only did the Lord tell Elijah that he did not stand alone, He told him he still had a job to do. I believe that the Lord has the same message for His people today, “I still have a job for you to do.” And Elijah went on to do that job until he was taken up into glory.

If the Lord were to ask you today, “What are you doing here?” would you answer like the student at the beginning of this Studies series with, “Nuthin?”

Or would you hear the voice that says ‘I am not done with you yet’, and then be about His business?
